Analytics & Tracking Setup

GA4, Google Tag Manager, Search Console and Looker Studio, set up so you see which channels bring in revenue and enquiries. Built for Shopify stores, multi-market sites and lead-generation businesses, with AI assistant traffic tracked as its own channel.

Why tracking breaks without anyone noticing

Broken tracking rarely looks broken. The dashboard still shows numbers, so nobody questions them. Meanwhile purchases are counted twice, orders from organic search are credited to direct traffic, payment gateways appear as referral sources, and every market is blended into one figure that hides what each country is doing.

The result is decisions made on the wrong numbers. Budget moves away from channels that are working, and SEO gets judged on traffic because revenue cannot be traced back to it.

Shopify stores have an extra reason to check. Shopify has retired the additional scripts on its Thank you and Order status pages and moved checkout tracking to its customer events system. Tracking that relied on those scripts stopped recording purchases when the store was upgraded, and the store itself kept working normally, so many merchants have not noticed the gap.

What the setup covers

  • Google Analytics 4. Property and data stream configuration, data retention extended beyond the default, internal traffic filtered out, and payment gateways excluded as referral sources.
  • Key events. Purchases, add to cart, checkout steps, form submissions, calls and sign-ups, defined around what matters commercially rather than everything that fires.
  • Google Tag Manager. A clean, named and documented container, so the next person who opens it understands what each tag does and why it is there.
  • Ecommerce data. Product, value and currency passed correctly with each event, so revenue in GA4 lines up with what the store actually sold.
  • Shopify tracking. Customer events and custom pixels, or server-side tracking through Elevar where the store needs more accurate attribution.
  • Search Console. Verified, linked to GA4, and set up per market where the site serves more than one country.
  • Consent. Google Consent Mode configured for regions that require it, so tracking respects user choices, with modelling filling gaps where the property qualifies.
  • Market-level reporting. Each country section reported on its own, so one market's growth does not mask another market's decline.

AI assistant traffic as its own channel

People now arrive at websites from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. GA4 has started placing traffic from a list of AI assistants into its own AI Assistant channel, but that list does not cover every assistant, it does not apply to data recorded before the change, and visits from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode stay inside organic search.

A custom channel group and a dedicated report fill those gaps and give one consistent trend line, so you see how many sessions AI assistants send, how those visitors behave and how much revenue it produces. Some AI visits arrive with no referrer and still show as direct, so the tracked figure is a floor rather than the full total. It is still the most reliable signal available of whether AI search visibility is turning into business.

Reporting you will actually read

Looker Studio dashboards built around the questions the business asks: how much revenue organic search produced this month, which markets are growing, which pages bring in buyers, and how AI assistant traffic is trending. One view for decisions, with the detail underneath for anyone who wants it.

Already have GA4 set up?

Most sites do. The work then starts with an audit of the existing setup: duplicate tags, missing or misfiring events, revenue that does not match the store's orders, broken cross-domain journeys and channels in the wrong place. You get a clear list of what is wrong and what it is distorting, then the fixes.

Your accounts, your data

Everything is built inside accounts you own. Access is granted to me, not the other way round, and nothing is tied to my login. If we stop working together, the tracking keeps running and stays entirely yours.

Where this fits

Tracking setup works as a standalone project or as the first step of an ongoing SEO engagement. Either way, it means every later decision rests on numbers you trust. For agencies, the same work is available under your brand through white-label SEO.

This service covers measurement across the site and attribution for organic search. Managing Google Ads or paid social accounts sits outside it.

The stack I work in every week

GA4, Google Search Console, Google Tag Manager, Looker Studio and Elevar on Shopify are the tools behind the client reporting I run, including dashboards that track traffic and revenue from AI assistants separately. The same setup work has been part of launching new country sections, where tracking is decided before launch rather than retrofitted.

Analytics and tracking questions, answered

Why does GA4 revenue not match my Shopify orders?

Some gap is normal. Refunds, currency conversion, ad blockers and visitors who decline cookies all create differences. A large or growing gap usually points to a setup problem, such as duplicate purchase events, purchases not recorded at checkout, or orders attributed to the wrong channel.

Do I need Google Tag Manager if I already have GA4?

For a simple site, GA4 on its own covers the basics. Tag Manager earns its place once you track form submissions, checkout steps, calls or several marketing tools, because it keeps every tag in one documented, testable container instead of scattered through the site code.

Can you track traffic from ChatGPT and other AI assistants?

Yes, for visits that pass a referrer. GA4 now has an AI Assistant channel, but it does not cover every assistant or earlier data, so a custom channel group and a dedicated report give the full, consistent picture. Some AI visits arrive without a referrer and show as direct, so the tracked number is a reliable floor rather than the complete total.

Do you set up tracking for Shopify stores?

Yes. Shopify tracking runs through its customer events system, with server-side tracking through Elevar where a store needs more accurate attribution. Purchase data is checked against real orders before the setup is signed off.

What access do you need?

Editor access to your GA4 property, publish access to your Tag Manager container and full user access to Search Console, plus store or CMS access where tags are installed. Everything stays in accounts you own.

Can you audit tracking that someone else set up?

Yes. Most work starts there. The audit lists what is broken, what it is distorting in your reports and the order to fix it in.
