Why WordPress needs its own approach

WordPress powers a huge share of the web, and out of the box it is a sound base for SEO. The trouble comes from what gets added over the years: a theme bought for its looks, a page builder, a plugin for every feature, and an SEO plugin installed and never configured. Each addition makes its own decisions about URLs, markup and speed, and they do not always agree with each other.

General technical SEO principles apply everywhere. WordPress SEO is knowing where this platform specifically leaks, and which fixes belong in settings, which in the theme and which in the server.

Where WordPress sites commonly lose ground

  • Thin archive pages in the index. Tag, category, author and date archives that WordPress generates automatically, plus attachment pages on older installs, competing with the pages that should rank.
  • Title templates working against you. The site title and tagline added to every page title by the theme or SEO plugin, repeating the same phrase across the whole site.
  • Plugin and page builder weight. Scripts and styles loading on every page whether they are needed or not, slowing the site and hurting Core Web Vitals.
  • Duplicate structured data. The theme and the SEO plugin each outputting their own schema, sending search engines mixed signals.
  • Sitemaps full of the wrong pages. Archives, attachments and thin pages listed alongside the pages that matter.
  • The visibility setting left on. The option that discourages search engines from indexing the site, ticked during development and never unticked.
  • Permalink changes without redirects. URLs changed during a tidy-up, with the old addresses left returning 404s.

Most established WordPress sites have several of these at once, and none of them show up when you look at the site in a browser.

What the work covers

  • A WordPress-specific technical audit. Indexing, archives, sitemaps, plugins, theme output and speed, checked against how WordPress actually behaves.
  • SEO plugin configuration. Rank Math or Yoast set up properly: title templates, indexing rules for each content type, sitemaps and schema.
  • Site structure and internal linking. Service pages, category pages and posts organised so authority flows to the pages that earn money.
  • On-page optimisation. Titles, headings, content and internal links on the pages with commercial intent, mapped so pages do not compete for the same keyword.
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals. Caching, image handling and script loading, with plugin and page builder weight addressed at the source.
  • Structured data. One clean, accurate set of schema rather than overlapping output from the theme and plugins.
  • Enquiry and conversion tracking. Form submissions, calls and bookings recorded in GA4, covered in detail under analytics and tracking setup.

For service and lead-generation businesses

Many WordPress sites exist to win enquiries rather than sell products. For these, the pages that matter are service pages, and the measure that matters is enquiries. The work focuses on giving each service its own properly structured page, answering the questions buyers ask before they get in touch, and tracking which pages produce leads. Businesses that rely on nearby customers also benefit from local SEO alongside it.

A WordPress developer background

I started in web development, including building WordPress sites, before specialising in SEO. Themes, templates and plugins are familiar ground. Fixes arrive specific enough for your developer to act on, and many of them I implement directly. This site runs on WordPress, on a custom theme, set up to the same standard.

Your theme and plugins stay unless they are the problem

The work starts from what your site already runs. Where a theme, page builder or plugin is costing you rankings or speed, you get a clear explanation of what it costs and the options for fixing it, rather than an assumption that the site needs rebuilding.

How progress is measured

Every engagement starts with a baseline from Google Search Console and GA4: which pages rank, for what, and what they produce. Monthly reporting then shows what changed, why it changed and what comes next. For an ecommerce site that means revenue from organic search. For a service business it means enquiries, calls and bookings, tied back to the pages that brought them in.

Results

Results across every platform I work on, with figures from Google Search Console, are on the case studies page.

WordPress SEO questions, answered

Is WordPress good for SEO?

Yes. WordPress is a sound foundation with full control over URLs, content and markup. Problems usually come from what gets added over time, such as indexed archive pages, heavy page builders, unconfigured SEO plugins and overlapping schema.

Which SEO plugin should I use, Rank Math or Yoast?

Both are capable. How the plugin is configured matters far more than which one you choose. Title templates, indexing rules for each content type, sitemaps and schema settings decide the outcome.

Do I need to change my theme or page builder?

Usually not. Most problems are fixable within the existing setup. Where a theme or builder is a real constraint on speed or markup, the cost and the options are explained before anything changes.

Should tag and category pages be indexed?

It depends on the site. Category pages with real content and search demand are worth keeping in the index. Thin tag, author, date and attachment archives usually are not. The decision is made page type by page type, based on what each one contributes.

Can you make the changes directly on my site?

Yes, with access to the WordPress admin. Changes that need theme or server work are either made directly or briefed clearly to your developer.
